The Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities in British Columbia to continue to live in the comfort of their home.
As your physical needs change, so too does the need to modify your home environment. Adapting a home improves accessibility and promotes safe and independent living.
Even small home adaptations can make a big difference in the lives of people who wish to remain in their homes longer.
If you or a member of your family is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities independently and safely – the HAFI program may be able to help.

The Rental Assistance Program (RAP) provides eligible low-income, working families with cash assistance to help with their monthly rent payments in the private market The program provides rent assistance to working families with a gross household income of $35,000 or less and at least one dependent child.

Subsidized Housing: Subsidized housing is long-term housing for people who permanently reside in British Columbia. Rental fees are calculated on a rent geared to income basis (30% of household total gross income, subject to minimum rent based on # of people). You may be eligible for subsidized housing if you can live independently and meet the household, residency, income and assets criteria.

The Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program helps make rents affordable for BC seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents who are age 60 or over and who pay rent for their homes.

Seniors’ Supportive Housing:  provides housing and support services to older adults, seniors and people with disabilities. The Program assists low-income British Columbians who are 55 years of age or older, and people of any age who have a disability or diminished ability. The Program’s modified apartment units are designed for people who can live independently with some assistance, but who are not eligible for assisted living or a greater level of car. non-profit partners operate these subsidized housing buildings. In general, they are multi-unit apartment buildings with private units. In each building, the operator has adapted some suites and common areas to include accessible features like handrails, grab bars and lever door handles. The buildings also have services that include hot meals, housekeeping, laundry, social activities and emergency response systems. Each building varies in style, size and amenities. BC Housing and our partners subsidize the cost of housing and services, but we will ask that you pay a portion of the monthly rent. Your payment could come from savings, a disability pension, old age security pension or a form of social assistance.

Support varies according to the needs of the individual and may include personal care, training in daily living activities and behavioural support.

Home Sharing Program
Desription:Home Share Program – An individualized, long-term living arrangement in which one or two adults share their lives with a care giver who provides holistic support.
The support from the caregiver may include provision of/or assistance with the following:
•Personal care
•Meal preparation
•Shopping for groceries, clothing and personal needs
•Medication ordering and management
•General household duties such as laundry and cleaning
•Managing the individual’s finances
•Managing the individual’s health care needs
•Facilitation of recreation activities and community resources
•Maintaining and building on personal relationships with family and friends
•Helping the individual to achieve the goals from their Person Centred Plan

Currently 21 individuals living in home share programs in North Vancouver. The home may take several forms, ranging from a basement suite with basic cooking and laundry facilities, to a bedroom in fully accessible home which has adaptive equipment as needed.

AWM Alliance: is providing affordable rental housing in accordance with the requirements of the Community Planning Department of the District of North Vancouver. Those who wish to apply for housing within Horizon, must meet and verify all the following requirements as outlined by the District of North Vancouver:
• To rent a unit in Horizon, a prospective tenant must establish that he or she is an eligible person by providing a copy of the previous year’s income tax notice of assessment for each household member or individual residing in the unit establish an aggregate annual household gross income that is less than or equal to 333% of the annual rent for the size of unit that he or she is applying.

Application Approval Process:
An application must be submitted, which is available on the AWM Alliance website at under the Residential Listings tab. You will also be required to submit a Notice of Assessment from the 2016 tax year as verification of household income.
Once the application has been received, it will be reviewed. It will then be determined, based on the application details and eligibility requirements, if you qualify for housing in Horizon. This review process may include an interview with Horizon representatives to clarify any issues regarding the application process.
After the review process is complete, applicants will be advised on whether they have been approved or not approved for housing at the building. Please note that meeting all requirements does not ensure acceptance.
