The Home Improvement Assistance Programs are funded by the Government of British Columba, and help seniors make their homes safer, more accessible, and more energy efficient. Services include:

The Home Owner Grant reduces the amount of property tax you pay for your principal residence.

If you’re a person with a disability, or you live with a relative who has a disability, and you meet certain requirements, you may be eligible for the additional grant of $275 on top of the regular or basic grant of $570. Learn more here…

Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program On-Reserve

Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program On-Reserve offers financial assistance to Band Councils and Band members to repair substandard homes to a minimum level of health and safety and to improve the accessibility of housing for people with disabilities.

Band Councils or individual homeowners who require repairs to their homes may be eligible to apply. Households who have a limited income, may be eligible to receive funding if their house lacks basic facilities or is in need of major repair in one or more of the following categories:

•Structural
•Electrical
•Plumbing
•Heating or
•Fire safety

Assistance may also be available to address a problem with overcrowding. Work carried out prior to approval is not eligible. Dwellings must be a minimum of five years old.

Tax deferment is a low interest loan program that helps qualified B.C. homeowners pay their annual property taxes on their principal residence.

Here’s how it works:
1.Receive your annual property tax notice
2.Confirm you qualify for one of the tax deferment programs
3.Make sure your property tax account is up to date
4.Submit your application to the correct office
5.Know what to expect if your application is approved
6.Renew your tax deferment loan agreement each year

The Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities in British Columbia to continue to live in the comfort of their home.
As your physical needs change, so too does the need to modify your home environment. Adapting a home improves accessibility and promotes safe and independent living.
Even small home adaptations can make a big difference in the lives of people who wish to remain in their homes longer
If you or a member of your family is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities independently and safely – the HAFI program may be able to help.

Disability discount – If you’ve been approved for a fuel tax refund under the B.C. government Fuel Tax Refund Program for Persons with Disabilities, you may also qualify for a 25 per cent discount on your Basic Autoplan—even if you don’t drive the vehicle you’re insuring.

Eligible drivers must bring appropriate documentation to their Autoplan broker’s office to have the discount added to their policy. More information on the Fuel Tax Refund Program can be found on this Ministry of Finance tax bulletin.

The Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program helps make rents affordable for BC seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents who are age 60 or over and who pay rent for their homes.

If you are a single parent receiving income or disability assistance, you may be eligible for training and support to secure a long-term job through the Single Parent Employment Initiative. Find out if you qualify for:

– Up to 12 months of funded training or paid work experience

– Continued income or disability assistance while in training

– Child care costs covered during your training or work placement and for the first year of employment

– Transit costs to and from school

– WorkBC Employment Services Centre supports, including workshops on resume writing, interview and work preparation

– Health supplement coverage for a full year after you leave income assistance for employment. This includes dental, optical and premium–free Medical Services Plan and Pharmacare programs

– Exemptions for bursaries, grants and scholarships when you are in an approved training program
