    The Community Based Services Department has an ongoing hiring practice. The department supports individuals of all ages and abilities on the North Shore. Suitable candidates will have:

    Typically job opportunities are part-time (5-10hours/week).

    Live-In Home Support Worker Wanted

    To care for a spirited 76-year-old woman who, due to a stroke, is a left-sided, spastic hemiplegic w/ dementia(off/on), dysphagia and considered advanced, extended care. Caregivers on HRSDC program are welcome to apply.

    Duties:
    Job involves all ADLs (i.e., includes cooking & housekeeping) and basic ROM exercises. Job orientation is provided. 

    Education: Residential Care Certificate (or comparable) and First Aid Certificate a must.  Food Safe certificate an asset, but not essential.

    Prerequisites: Recent Health & fitness confirmation letter by a doctor & criminal record verification, Influenza immunization annually mandatory, and two previous work references.

    Qualifications:
    You are fluent in English, between 5’3” and 5’6” tall, experienced in passive, manual transfers & ceiling lifts, have the ability to multi-task, can cook Canadian meals, and  if you are a resident of BC, you live in Vancouver, Burnaby or on the North Shore. You are also physically & emotionally strong, detail-oriented, organized, responsible, reliable, thrive under pressure, prefer to work in a home setting and want long-term employment. Having some knowledge of working with dementia, dysphagia, seizures and the elderly is helpful.  Note: Due to personal care reasons, female applicants are preferred.  Also, be advised that you will be subjected to cigarette smoke on occasion. 

    Days/Hours of Work:
    Full-time, 42 shift hours workweek average:
    4 shifts on (2 day shifts + 2 night shifts) & 3 days off; then 3 shifts on (2 day shifts + 1 night shift) & 4 days off, shifts are from 8:00am – 8:00pm (12hrs) and vice versa. The day shift has two
    half-hour breaks.

    The night shift has at least one 3-hour rest period but half the time there are two 3-hour rest periods.

    Remuneration/Benefits:
    Pay rate $8/hour with paid breaks & rest periods for Live-in Caregiver under federal program or $192 flat 24-hour day rate equivalent for Home Support Workers (HSW's). Overtime rates paid where applicable.  BC Ministry of Health subsidized. Direct deposit of earnings. Coverage with WCB. Optional Dental Plan for full-time employees after one year of employment. Certificates issued for outstanding performance.
