T

he New Year has begun with a flourish of activity at the North Shore Disability Resource Centre.  Everyone has returned to the task of “accreditation” with a much appreciated energy and enthusiasm.  I have greatly enjoyed the coming together of the many different stakeholder groups to discuss our programs and how to make them even better.  The benefits of the accreditation process are already becoming clear.

Obtaining a three year accreditation certificate from CARF after the Site Survey in April 2004 will provide us with proof that we are providing quality services for the people we support, helping us to maintain and strengthen our mission statement of “Working for a community for all”.

In the past two months the sub-committees that were developed to complete the task of accreditation have formed and solidified.  The CARF Survey Preparation Guides have been completed and we are ready to start working on meeting the various standards required to complete the process.  It will be a lot of work but the outcomes will be very beneficial.  Because our Unlicensed Homes don’t do Individualized Service Planning, CARF has agreed they will not be included in the Site Survey. They will, however, continue to meet as many of the CARF standards as are applicable.

Each program will complete a new Policy and Procedure Manual, a Family and Consumer Handbook and begin a new process of Individualized Service Planning as well as a system to track individual and program outcomes.  One of the main purposes of accreditation is to ensure on-going quality improvement in all our programs and services so we are always asking people served what they need, making sure they receive it, asking again, tracking, asking again, and so on.

I feel confident we will be ready to apply to CARF in December, 2003 for a Site Survey in April, 2004.  The incredible cooperative spirit shown by our staff, families, persons served and other stakeholders has been tremendous and is greatly appreciated.

Many other agencies who have completed or who are in the process of completing CARF Accreditation have been very helpful in terms of sharing documents, ideas, and support.  An exciting opportunity to network and share is going on throughout the province as well as at the agency level, a further bonus of the Accreditation process.
